Marine Wind Generators
An Introduction to Marine Wind Generators
Marine wind generators are designed to charge batteries onboard boats & yachts. To be suitable for marine use, a wind generator needs to be carefully designed, reliable and built with marine grade components. Wind generators or turbines are often combined with solar pv panels to form a 'hybrid' battery charging system.
A smooth running, quiet wind generator is essential for a peaceful night's sleep. It also improves relationships with other fellow boatowners, who are looking to spend a weekend relaxing on their boat, ideally without the sound of a howling banshee ringing in their ears.

Marlec Rutland 504 Marine Wind Generator
The Marlec 504 is a compact, reliable marine wind generator ideal for trickle charging batteries when away from your boat. The high inertia alternator design maintains momentum between gusts of wind like a flywheel, providing a more constant output, resulting in more charge into the battery.
As Marlec's smallest wind generator, the Rutland 504 stands out from the crowd with it's safety blade design. The 504 has a unique outer ring to provide protection from the blades, providing less chance for accidents or for the blades to get tangled in the boat's rigging.
The Rutland 504 has a brushless alternator design with a fixed, rather than rotating shaft. Built for a harsh marine environment using durable materials, the 504 will provide many years of maintenance-free battery charging.
Marlec also produce a range of suitable charge regulators, designed to prevent the battery from being overcharged. A range of marine mounting kits are available.
Full details here.
Suggested charge regulators : Rutland HRSi, Rutland HRDi (with display).
Marlec 504 Marine Wind Generator - Features :
- 510mm rotor diameter, turning radius 304mm, net weight 3.5 kg.
- Power output ratings: 25 watts in 19 knots of wind, max output 60 watts.
- Low start-up wind speed of only 5 knots means more power is generated.
- Low friction 3 phase brushless alternator for high efficiency.
- Encapsulated windings and magnets for reliability.
- Tough, injection-moulded aerofoil blades.
- Smooth and silent operation.
- 12v or 24v models available.

Marlec Rutland 914i MPPT Marine Wind Generator
The Marlec Rutland 914i marine is the latest generation of the Rutland turbine, utilising MPPT to maximise power delivery.
The 914i incorporates a brushless, low friction flywheel-type alternator, which enables the turbine to keep spinning when the wind drops momentarily. As a result, the generator delivers more power, especially in lower wind speeds.
All of Marlec's turbines are finely balanced in the factory, ensuring smooth, quiet running. The lastest model features a new more streamlined body and efficient aerofoil blades which have been tested to withstand extreme wind speeds.
The Marlec Rutland 914i is built with durable UV resistant materials, giving years of trouble free service even under the harsh conditions of a marine environment.
Marlec produce charge regulators for use with their wind generators, which prevent the battery from being overcharged. A range of marine mounting kits are also available.
